La Trobe University’s position as the national leader in medicinal agriculture has been recognised with La Trobe heading the $27 million initiative to host the first Industrial Transformation Research Hub in the field.

The initiative combines extensive research and industry expertise to create new jobs and drive better health outcomes. Researchers from La Trobe, the Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Institute and the University of Melbourne, along with industry leaders Cann Group and TPI Enterprises, will come together to transform the production of high quality plant-derived therapeutics into an integrated, national industry that spans primary producers and manufacturers.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Hub scheme aims to encourage research collaborations between universities and outside organisations to solve challenging industry issues and drive growth, productivity and competitiveness in key sectors.

The Medicinal Cannabis Research Hub will be led by La Trobe Professor Tony Bacic. The Hub will receive almost $1 million a year from the ARC for the five years of the program. This funding will be supplemented with more than $6 million from our industry partners and will create new jobs in an emerging industry.

Further details of the research program and the full list of participants is available on La Trobe University’s website.
