NORTH Link – Advocating for Melbourne’s North in Canberra

“One NORTH Link’s key purposes is to put the case for Melbourne’s North to those in Government and Opposition in both Canberra and Melbourne. We are a growing region, expecting to grow by 50 per cent in population terms out to 2036, and we need matching transport, health, education and utilities infrastructure, as well as programs to support our employers, their workforces and residents.

In the week of 19 August, NORTH Link co-led a Melbourne’s North delegation to Canberra with the Northern Councils Alliance. Participating organisations included La Trobe University, Kangan Institute, Northern Health and the municipalities of Darebin, Merri-bek, Mitchell and Nillumbik. There were 7 meetings with Government Ministers, MPs and advisers and 4 with Opposition Shadow Ministers and advisers. The meetings focused in infrastructure needs for a growing population and program responses to support the region’s employers and workforce, especially from an employment and skills point of view.

We were conscious we weren’t the only regional delegation in Canberra, and saw quite a few groups from around Australia walking the corridors of Parliament House, no doubt asking for similar support. I can say we were able to put our case fairly, factually and accurately and were listened to with respect. The meetings we had provided valuable information that we will be following up now we are back in Melbourne’s North.”
