On Friday 17 May, Chris James, Executive Director of NORTH Link was able to attend an announcement by the Prime Minister Hon. Anthony Albanese MP of $750 million worth of funding to complete the vital Camerons Lane diamond interchange on the Hume Freeway at Beveridge, a project that will make the nearby Beveridge Intermodal Precinct possible.

The Beveridge Intermodal Precinct will anchor the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Project at the southern end and be the largest intermodal freight facility of its kind in Australia. It will support double-stacked container services for 1,800 metre freight trains to Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Brisbane via Parkes, or directly to Sydney, as well as cement Melbourne’s place as Australia’s freight and logistics capital.

It will also create over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs for the thousands of new residents coming to live in the region and service the significant manufacturing and logistics sectors in Melbourne’s North.

Today’s announcement is a result of years of persistent advocacy by key partners in Melbourne’s North, namely the municipalities of Mitchell, Hume and Whittlesea, the Northern Councils Alliance and NORTH Link. This has involved the construction of many submissions and media releases and countless meetings trying to influence Commonwealth and State Governments. Mary Agostino from Mitchell Shire has been particularly tireless in her advocacy for both the Beveridge Intermodal Precinct and Camerons Lane.
